It wasn’t nearly as sexy as I thought it would be.

The dress code at my major undisclosed consulting firm was revised today. From April 2001 through about 2pm or so today, women were required to wear hosiery, and as the news spread that our pigheaded (male) site manager had lifted that requirement, there was much spontaneous celebration.

And then came the wave of pantyhose-shedding. It started at the far end of the east wing, when one woman stood up and wriggled out of her hose, and moved in a westerly direction across the office. Some women held up their hosiery in triumph and defiantly crammed them in their purses. Some were more discreet, retreated to the restroom and emerged beaming and free.

All work has now stopped. This office as at least 2/3 female, my side of it closer to 80%. The women are half dazed, as if in a dream. A few of them are a little cold. But they’re all thrilled, unbelieveably thrilled, Christmas morning thrilled. They’ve been grumbling and questioning and begging and — dare I say — bitching about this policy for over two years, and finally, someone GETS IT.

It’s a victory, a very little victory, but still, mark it down. Effective immediately, there is slightly more justice in this world.
