I wrote this in ten minutes, which is a miracle for me.
August 7th, 2003 | by Scott Jennings |As near as I can tell, the prescription speed started to wear out around 3pm, about seven hours after I took it. I can’t be sure, because I worked so quickly and accurately today that I took care of all the work that I had been telling people I had already finished, and wrapped up everything else I needed to do just after lunch. My sources of work were tied up in meetings all day, so I was left to tread in place a bit, which was difficult — I found myself focusing on how focused I am, and I hate meta.
Still, easily my most productive day in ages. And I’m marvelling at how absolutely effortless everything was. If I tried to do this yesterday, it would have been an incredible struggle, with the sacrifice of the backs of dozens of envelopes to hold down the intermediate details of the calculation I was programming. Today, I was able to hold all that in my head and piece it all together and program it in one step. It was slightly Matrix.
I’ve definitely slowed down since 10am, but I’ve written this fairly easily, so I think there’s still some speed in me. We’ll see how well I do tomorrow after I get more work.
I can’t wait to teach and perform like this — I think I’ll be much better at both with a little more focus. I’ve been giving Mister Diplomat twenty minutes of notes for every Harold and blaming it on Delaney’s influence, but the truth is, I ramble because I forget how I started my sentence.
So, to summarize, everything is ok.
