Oh, what a beautiful morning…

Are you in need of a quick way to destroy an optimistic, I’m-going-to-attack-this-new-week sort of attitude? Here are two easy steps:

1) Heavy rain on Monday morning
2) An e-mail from upper management containing opaque allusions to layoffs coming over the next several weeks

The preliminary speculation-rumor is that these moves will shake out a bit lower down on the food chain than I sit, but still, when your company decides that profits aren’t growing as fast as projected and the answer is “the termination of a number of our colleagues,” no one wins. Oddly, telling me that I will either be fired or be expected to do more with less isn’t the best way to maintain my level of motivation.

Every single day of the past seventeen months has played out as so tightly scripted; I just want to know where in the story I am. This Mamet phase is growing tiresome — I’d prefer something a bit more whimsical and universally accessible, maybe even a musical. A good guy, a bad guy, something to conquer, a romance, ample comic relief, a victory, a happy ending. I’d like my life to be a little more like Oklahoma for awhile.
