A Very Navy Thanksgiving.

November 28th, 2003 | by Scott Jennings |

Jeff had duty aboard the USS Iwo Jima, and I had nothing better to do, so I tagged along for Thanksgiving. This is a brief essay, with pictures.

I got the full tour of the ship this time, since the thing was practically empty for the holiday. First, we went up to the bridge, distracted the petty officer on duty, and I hopped into the captain’s chair for this picture:

The chair itself was comfortable, but a little more drab and utilitarian than I expected. I watch too much Star Trek. Also, the thing was about five feet off the floor.

Next, we went out on the deck, and took handsome pictures of each other:

We went back inside, and Jeff showed me the berthing, where he sleeps in a compartment called a rack. I tried to fit myself into the rack, and it was comically difficult:

On the way out of the berthing, we came across a few stacks of helmets, and I put one on and looked really mean:

We went to the transceiver room, where the high-tech and scary equipment that Jeff works on is stored. He also stores his drum set in there, tucked away behind racks of equipment when he’s not playing around with it. But since today was a holiday, he decided to set them up and make noise, presumably to keep away evil spirits:

After that, we went to his shop, and sat around and watched football for awhile until it was time for dinner, which was surprisingly good for a meal on a mess deck. Then I watched some more football and went home and fell asleep.

I also saw these seven amusing things, which I will include with no further explanation:
