I shake my fist at you, Spielberg!
June 24th, 2004 | by Scott Jennings |Katy and I saw The Terminal tonight. A pretty good film, a little hamfisted and contrived in spots, but Tom Hanks’ performance was downright Chaplinesque in his physical expressiveness — surprising, and a joy to watch. And any project that keeps Kumar Pallana working will have my support.
I did have one major beef with the film, but it’s a bit of a spoiler, so don’t click to read more unless you’ve seen the film or don’t mind having it spoiled.
Ok, so in the very last scene, Navorski has his last autograph, and he hails a cab and tells the driver to take him “home,” back to his fictional Eastern European nation. He’s at the Ramada on Lex, and needs to get back to JFK. Queensboro Bridge, of course, just as he told the cabbie on the way in. So the camera pulls back, and the cab is… entering Times Square?
What?
I can only imagine the scene at the AMC Empire when that gets screened. I mean, come on. New Yorkers would not put up with that shit. And don’t tell me Navorski is being taken for a ride five minutes after we establish his character knows enough about the city to call his route from JFK.
Poor attention to detail. SPIELBERG!!!
