ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!
June 6th, 2004 | by Scott Jennings |I seriously have a major case of the build-a-fire fever and the cook-meat-over-top-of-it flu. After arriving to a Sunday afternoon cookout to find the two hostesses completely ignoring the refreshment/cookout needs to concentrate on painting a banner for some reason, I went into full I’m-a-man-and-I’m-here-to-help mode.
Now, I kept this quiet at the time, but I had never actually built a fire in a charcoal grill before today. That didn’t stop Austin and I from reading the directions (stack coals into pyramid, douse with lighter fluid, light, wait for the coals to get white, collapse pyramid, cook) and doing it up. It was a beautiful fire that I fanned with a paper plate — white hot and perfectly even for over two hours. I grilled at least twenty burgers, ten bratwursts, and eight hot dogs; I was in the zone. It was a beautiful thing. The fire aroused me.
It was my own insistence that we continue using this beautiful fire that led Erik Martin to begin grilling Krispy Kreme donuts and fruits and cakes. The fire was corrupted. Fucking carbohydrates.
I have resolved to build this. Austin and Corey are on board. This will happen.
I also made hot crab dip today. I really was in the zone.
