Three open letters.

September 29th, 2004 | by Scott Jennings |

Dear Andrew Hutson,

Kindly quit your whining. Yes, I know you long for the prestige that comes with my tacit approval-by-blogrolling, but as I explained last night, I am loathe to clutter my list with dead blogs. Oh, Andrew Hutson, if you only knew — so very many of us pick up a blog, for it is rather bright and shiny, play with it for a week or two, and then realize that as a hobby or an outlet, it’s pretty dumb. The sane among us let their blogs die quietly and peacefully, never to mention them again. You should be so lucky.

But in the event that you fail to heed these warnings and continue to blog, then yes, I will be delighted to grant you posse status. Please don’t be discouraged; I know you’re excited about your new blog, I know the feeling all too well. But remember this, Andrew Hutson: you must blog only for yourself, not for the approval of others. You must write the things that you wish to read. And if you don’t wish to write anything for nine or ten days, you must be cool with that, as well.

And so, for these reasons I wave my hand, your application for posse status will remain pending.

Sincerely,

Scott Jennings

Dear Andi Goetschius and Erik Martin,

Your applications for posse status have been granted. This will serve as my tacit approval of your continued existence. You are also invited to dinner.

Sincerely,

Scott Jennings

Dear “Action” Austin Nava and Pete O’Bryan,

You get no links for your names, because my vast readership already knows what to expect. This is your notice that your continued membership in my oddly elite blog posse is in jeopardy, due to inactivity.

Austin, you’re a valued friend and a considerate roommate. However, this does not explain why you spend as much time as you do online without updating your blog. You have your own domain name! Responsibility!

Pete, you’re a valued friend and coworker, and I fear you just a little bit. I know firsthand how busy you are, but c’mon buddy, domain name, responsibility. Let’s talk about it. We can get you some actual blog software, it’ll make your life easier.

What an indignity it would be to see yourselves removed from the posse. It would be a first, gentlemen. Quite a first.

Sincerely,

Scott Jennings
