Huge weekend!

Happy Memorial Day, y’all. Gotta say, pretty glad it’s over.

Saturday was the big big DSI fundraiser, and yes, it was incredible. I was completely occupied with the silent auction, which I claimed as MINE MINE MINE very early on in the planning process, and with good reason: I’m a complete nerd for auctions. I studied a lot of auction theory as a undergraduate, and running an auction has always been a little dream of mine. So this was my chance, and I went with a sealed second-bid auction — which means that everyone writes their bid secretly, the high bidder wins, but pays only the amount of the second highest bid. It’s a great format for a benefit because people get to relax and enjoy themselves, but the complete lack of information drove people to get their bids in early and often. Marvelous.

The auction went off without a hitch, thanks to the detail-orientation of my Katy and the support of the event organizers. I was even asked twice if I was a professional auctioneer. That’s about as big a compliment as the time Ross and I did a show and we were asked afterwards if we were really gay.

Sunday, the stupid Star Wars marathon.

Today we took it nice and easy. We were invited out to teammate Zack Bly’s ranch in rural northern Orange County, and I almost flaked out. But Katy convinced me a little fresh air would do me good, which was just what I needed. Zack’s parents’ house is absolutely stunning, a gorgeous two story vaulted ceiling log cabin that his father built. It’s surrounded by a beautiful lawn and garden, native trees, and wilderness. It’s just how I want to live some day. We grilled hamburgers made from local beef (a burger from one cow — what a treat!), relaxed on the deck, took in the scenery, played a little badminton, and had some homemade ice cream from Lisa’s contraption. Perfect evening.

Time for bed and time to get back into the routine. Austin moved out today, so I have the place to myself. I need to clean up after the Star Wars party, clean a little harder… and place an ad for a roommate. Future roommate, when you read this, I promise that I don’t resent you and I enjoy sharing my apartment with you. Please don’t read anything into how much I’m dragging my ass on welcoming you into our home. We’re going to get on famously. Hooray for you, future roommate! Enjoy the affordable apartment, so very close to downtown Chapel Hill and Carrboro!
