November 2nd, 2007 | by Scott Jennings |From now on (or until Sunday), if someone tells me that we’re meeting at “4:00pm EST,” I’m showing up an hour early and then going home when I’m the only one there. EST stands for Eastern Standard Time, of course, which is one hour behind Eastern Daylight Time, which is what we’re still observing here in most of the United States, thank you very much, Congress. Perhaps you’re familiar with the linguistic phenomenum of hypercorrection? I think this is the same known defect in the human brain at work.
So this Sunday at 2:00am EST, you’ll be correct. Until then, all times EDT. Or if you really need to clarify the time zone, Chicago dorks, just say Eastern.
