Turning “community organizer” into a sneering wedge word is the most cynical, skin-crawling thing I’ve heard in a while. It’s a classic example of implying something insidious while leaving the wiggle room to turn it back on anyone who dares question the obvious. I don’t know why I’m surprised at barely-under-the-surface race baiting anymore but somehow I still am.

That carnival last night was just an incredibly sickening display of naked racism, classism, and a variety of other -isms I have yet to fully coin. The way they turn higher education and selfless community service into something that can’t be trusted is remarkable — for the party that purports to celebrate individual achievement and hard American work, they truly have become the party of Harrison Bergeron, an arena of people cheering as loudly as they can for the triumph of mediocrity. Their idea of “service” is taking orders from authority without question because you love your country; our idea of “service” is questioning authority and helping people who need help because you love your country. Both kinds of service are clearly necessary (with the caveat that hopefully the authority giving the orders isn’t, you know, evil), but to impugn people who put their feet on the ground to help people that get left behind — I can’t imagine what kind of insecurity that’s designed to cover.
